The International Disabled Symbol

Welcome back to Brains on Wheels. Today I would like to talk about the international disabled symbol.

When I was younger, I never thought anything of it, but looking at the disabled symbol now, I don't think it actually represents every disabled person properly because not everyone who has a disability uses a wheelchair. I know that this symbol is recognised all around the world, but I think it would be more representative for people with a range of disabilities if the symbol had more than just a wheelchair user. For example; it could have a wheelchair, walking aids, and white canes (with braille). Or simply just text and braille, as you can't have symbols to represent every single disability.

This is the international disabled symbol at the moment:

Last year ASDA brought out a new sign for a disabled toilet where it says "Not every disability is visible" and underneath it says "Accessible Toilet". Personally, I think this is fantastic because not only would it make people aware of invisible disabilities, it will also help to remove discrimination that any person with an invisible disability may face. So, thank you ASDA for creating these signs.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this post.

Until next time, goodbye.
