Myths About Wheelchair Users
Hello everyone, today I would like to talk "facts" about wheelchair users others seem to think are true, when in fact, a lot are false...
I can't name them all because there are just too many to talk about!
I'm going to list and explain a few now...
"Wheelchair users can't walk" - This is a load of rubbish because different people use wheelchairs for lots of different reasons, some people may have a slight impairment, which may mean that they use a wheelchair sometimes, but not all the time. Some people may use wheelchairs daily, but like me, they do not stay in their wheelchairs all of the time. For example; I use my wheelchair when I go out places, but I transfer by walking most of the time. Even though I have co-ordination issues, I can walk with support.
"Wheelchair users can't speak their own mind" - This is not true at all because just because someone uses a wheelchair, does not mean that they can't speak out. It certainly doesn't mean that they can't think for themselves! I know people who use wheelchairs that are extremely clever, and they are not afraid to make themselves heard! Wheelchair users can have a wicked sense of humor as well.
"Wheelchair users can't be successful" - This statement is false as well because wheelchair users can have the same success as any other person if they work hard enough. In a way, it also comes down to how society perceives wheelchair users. If things are in place and if people who use wheelchairs have the capability, then why not?
Thanks for reading, and until next time, goodbye.
