Yes, I Use a Wheelchair... But Not All Day-Every Day
Hi, in today's post, I am going to explain why I don't use my wheelchairs all the time.
I never thought I would write this, but some people don't seem to understand that some wheelchair users do not use their wheelchairs all the time. I get asked things like "Are you in your wheelchair?" and "When are you going in your wheelchair?" - This makes it sound like it's fun to be in a wheelchair. When I see messages like this, I think "Oh, I can't wait to go in my wheelchair... Not!" Yes, I use wheelchairs, but not all day, every day! This really bugs me because my wheelchairs are only mobility aids, they are not an important aspect of my personality. People think it's fun to be in a wheelchair, but it's not...
Why does it matter whether I'm sitting in my wheelchair or not? I don't use my wheelchairs inside my home much, I sit and move around on the floor. I may not use my wheelchairs for days because I stay at home. I actually feel more free when I am not in my chair because I can move around more.
I think that this is a form of stereotyping because you shouldn't just assume that all wheelchair users are always in their wheelchairs, because they're not. If you said that, you would be about as far away from the truth as you can be.
So, please do take note of what I have said, and please don't assume that if someone uses a wheelchair, they are in it all the time.
Thanks for reading this, and I will see you next time.
